How Virtual Reality can transform Safety Trainings

A safe workplace promotes productivity and leads to better financial results.

However, based on the current level of maturity in the organization the efforts involved in building a strong safety culture can be enormous. Employee training plays a crucial role in achieving these objectives. Nevertheless, effectiveness of the training programs usually gets compromised due to one or more factors as described below.

  • The trainings are not encouraged by the line management due to time pressure in manufacturing. As a result, the training programs end up with very thin participation.

  • Most of the safety trainings are focused on knowledge enhancement of participants with very little scope for practicing. Although, this helps participants in gaining some extra knowledge, but as they usually do not get any opportunity to apply them, such knowledge is lost in very short time.

  • Safety Trainings can often be boring in the hands of a not-so-competent trainer. Trainees are subjected to endless PowerPoint slides for hours, without really engaging them in the session. This further causes poor participation in the trainings, and lack of enthusiasm in applying the new behaviour in the workplace.

  • The training modules are not built keeping in view the participants’ current knowledge level and learning behaviour. Hence the persons taking the course does not understand and/or retain the communicated message.

Hence, in such cases, most of the time, effort, and money, is wasted without gaining much outcome from trainings. Virtual Reality (VR) on the other hand provides a unique opportunity to deal with the above challenges. It offers following advantages over the conventional mode of trainings.

  • Since it does not need the trainers and trainees to come together in a group, it does not affect the line function or its productivity. Trainees can take the trainings at their own free time and get certified at the end of the course automatically.

  • Training modules offered by INOVR are filled with unlimited practice options in a risk free and pressure free virtual environment. Hence participant get the opportunity to apply their learnings immediately after the trainings which helps in knowledge retention.

  • The VR training modules are filled with lot of interactions in high quality immersive environment. A hazard communication happens best when participants experience the hazard in a virtual environment as a result of their wrong behaviour. It helps not only by engaging the participants in the program, but also the knowledge transferred is best retained for use in their workplace.

  • INOVR trainings modules are built by the subject matter experts with a lot of behavioral science considerations to make them efficient and interesting.

Finally, the VR based trainings offer a great opportunity to save from the recurring cost of trainings, and the cost of failures due to its ineffectiveness. Without real-world boundaries, virtual reality is set to redefine safety trainings.
